City of Eugene to increase fines for parking in bike lanes, pedestrian areas [Updated]

The Eugene Parking Service Office has determined that the current parking fine structure is not effectively motivating drivers to “make better and safer parking decisions” such as not parking in bike lanes, sidewalks, or in front of driveways.  As a result,  fines will be increased for parking in bike lanes from $25 to $40, and the fine for parking on sidewalks and in front of driveways will be increased from $15-$25.  The new fine structure will come into effect May 3rd, 2010.

Is it refreshing that the City of Eugene is beginning to take dangerous parking practices seriously, and we can hope enforcement will also be increased.  When I reported a car parked in the Pearl St Bike Lane last November during rush hour, I was told that it would take several hours for an officer to come and ticket the car.  Luckily, no-one was injured during the wait (as far as I know).

Meeting Summary: Alder St. Workshop and BPAC: Councilwoman Jennifer Solomon conflicted on bike priorities

The April 7th Alder St. Workshop

Last week was a week of meetings, and I sat through them all just for you!  Although I must confess, it really wasn’t so bad.  The Alder St. Workshop was a pleasant discussion on bike priorities, and the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) meeting fed me cake.

Topics covered in this post include Alder St. progress and updates, City Councilor Jennifer Solomon’s apparently contradictory bike policies, Transportation Enhancement grants, and downtown EMX routing.

Eugene Police Plan “Focused Enforcement Operation” Downtown, WBE provides a legal cycling tutorial

Location of the "Focused Enforcement Operation."

The Eugene Police Department (EPD) is planning a traffic “Focused Enforcement Operation” in downtown Eugene on  March 30th and 31st.  The location of the extra enforcement will be from 6th Ave. in the north to 18th Ave. in the south, and Lincoln St. in the west to Kincaid St. in the east. Click on the image to the right for a larger map of the area.

According to EPD  sources the goal of the operation will be to uniformly enforce the law for all users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and car drivers.  The reason I am giving this warning is to make sure that no one is given a citation due to lack of information and knowledge. Read on for details on what the police will be watching for, and how to avoid ending up on the wrong side of the law.

SRTS Updates 4J School District on Progress (audio and video)

On Wednesday, March 3rd, Shane Rhodes and Lisa VanWinkle updated the 4J School Board about Safe Routes to School (SRTS) projects within the district, future plans, and projected grant spending.  WeBikeEugene was able to obtain the audio from the school board meeting, and Rhodes (a WeBikeEugene contributor) was kind enough re-create his presentation as narrated video for your viewing pleasure.

WeBikeEugene.org Official Launch

Welcome to WeBikeEugene.org!

This post  marks the official launch of WeBikeEugene.  We have been posting for a few weeks now, and it’s time to spread the word about the site.

WeBikeEugene has a simple mission statement.  We exist to spread news of cycling to cyclists and others in the Eugene/Springfield area.  We plan to cover advocacy, road riding, commuting, infrastructure projects, off-road projects, recreational riding, road and off-road racing, cycling community events, and anything else having to do with cycling in Eugene, Springfield, and the surrounding area.

Some describe us as Eugene’s version of BikePortland.org. We consider this comparison a great compliment, and hope to be as thorough one day as they are.  However, we have no current plans to expand our coverage beyond the Eugene/Springfield area, nor do we have the resources to update as often.

You can see a little bit of who we are about by browsing our previous topics.  We are not fully operational as of yet, and are still in the process of bringing more contributors on staff.  As we acquire more writers our coverage of events, especially in the racing and off-road scenes, will expand.

We welcome any suggestions for articles, news tips, and submitted articles.  You can contact us here. None of us run this site full-time, and we welcome any help and suggestions from our readers.

As well as doing our own reporting, we will also be aggregating other Eugene/Springfield area news sources, including GEARS news, Safe Routes to School news, the City of Eugene’s InMotion Newsletter, and other sources.  Our goal is not to compete with these already wonderful news sources, but instead to make them more accessible to the general public.

Many people have put a lot of effort into making this site a reality, but it will only be useful if people spread the word.  A cycling community educated about current cycling events will progress faster than one that is left in dark.  You can help by reading, spreading the word, suggesting article ideas, or even contributing.

And, of course, the most important thing is to get out and ride!

Weekend News Wrapup 02/06/10

A lot happened in Eugene’s cycling world this first week of February.  Here are some of the key events that happened this week concerning SRTS, the UO Bike Program, Territorial Highway Construction, Alder St./Riverbank path access, Fern Ridge Bike Path EmX construction, the Crest Drive controversy, and STP-U Funds.

Eugene Safe Routes to School received a $495,000 grant.

The Eugene Safe Routes to School Program and the City of Eugene have just been awarded a $495,000 grant from the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) and the National Safe Routes to School program.

The grant applies to seven local schools and their respective surrounding areas. Improvements on way include  “Stutter Flash” crossings at 28th and Hilyard, 30th  and Alder,  18th and Friendly St,  a crosswalk at Chambers and 14th,  and scores of other improvements.  Stay tuned to the Eugene SRTS blog where more details will be posted soon.
