About WeBikeEugene.org

Who, or what, is WeBikeEugene.org, you ask? I believe you’ll find that the answer is – like the noble bicycle – simple yet daring, rigid yet free, constantly going in circles yet always moving forward, and usually covered in chain grease. Our origins, like those of the paint scratches that you find on your frame, are shrouded in mystery yet painfully obvious.

We are riders in, advocates for, and members of the Eugene/Springfield cycling community. We have come together to share our knowledge of “what’s going on,” as best we can – and together with readers seek out new knowledge. We also “nerd out” a lot about things that cyclists think are interesting.

In short, we are attempting to be Eugene’s version of BikePortland.org, but without all the stuff about other places  (they do that well enough themselves).  We want to cover as much that is going on in Eugene as we can.  Please contact us with your story ideas or  requests.

Our roster is ever growing, and membership is not necessarily limited to those listed here. We are always looking for new writers willing to be non-paid and over appreciated.

Mike Seager

Mike Seager

Mike Seager – Editor, Webmaster

Seager is a year-round cycle commuter based out of the South Hills of Eugene, Oregon.  His cycling experience includes two fully loaded cycle tours from Eugene to Boston, cycling across Iowa ten times on RAGBRAI, working two and a half years for a bicycle powered recycling company in snowy Ames, Iowa,  and being rained on more times than he can count while riding to work in Eugene.

Seager is a member of the GreyMatter Jugglers, Eugene’s only bicycle powered circus troupe, and is an avid offroad unicycler.

Kendra Seager – Copy Editor

Kendra has a B.A. in Linguistics and is extremely talented in telling other people that their spelling, grammar, and overall writing ability is lacking.  As such she has gleefully undertaken the task of making sure that the rest of us don’t sound like drunken monkeys with broken fingers.

Kendra is a more-often-than-not daily cycle commuter in Eugene, and has cycled across Iowa once on RAGBRAI. She is planning a self-supported cycle tour based on the northern lakes route this summer.  She is also an avid backpacker, yarn artist, and the oft forlorn wife of a clown.

Shane Rhodes

Shane Rhodes

Shane Rhodes – Contributor

Shane is the Program Manager for the Eugene Safe Routes to School program.   He works for the 4J School District and using the 5 E’s of SRTS hopes to get more than half the kids of Eugene walking or biking to school.

Shane has worked in the bicycle industry since 1995 when he started at the Center for Appropriate Transport with brief stints in the food service and coffee world.   He has taught bicycle education programs and advocated for cyclist and pedestrian issues in Sevilla, Spain, the Bay Area of California, and of course his hometown of Eugene where he first learned to ride on the river trail.  Shane now lives in the Far West neighborhood with his marvelous partner, Melissa and their daughter, Isadora.

Alexander Hongo – Contributor

Alexander Hongo

Alexander Hongo is a teacher and mechanic at the University of Oregon Bicycle Program, which helps pay the rent, but more importantly, serves his desire to encourage others to embrace Do-It-Yourselfism. He’s worked as a cargo courier for Pedaller’s Express, done a few self-supported two-day-tours, made numerous full-hearted but half-baked attempts at cyclocross, and tricked a vodka company to pay him to ride from New York to Los Angeles while drinking beer the whole way.

Alexander remains faithful to his first love, bicycle polo, and plays at least once a week despite working and studying journalism and photography.

Katura Reynolds – Contributor

Katura’s fully-loaded bike tour from Canada to Mexico in 2007 was great training for her current commute between her home in downtown Eugene and her workplace at Mount Pisgah Arboretum. She prides herself, while hauling loads of bulk mail to the Springfield post office, on being the slowest bike courier in town.

Katura is a member of the Bottom Brackettes, Eugene’s local bike-dance group, and she has a peculiar passion for Tweed Rides. She freelances as a science illustrator (http://katura-art.com) in her copious spare time.

There are more staff on the way!
