Group of men harrass and assault cyclists on the Fern Ridge Path, police need your help [updated]

Did you experience these people?  The police need your help!

A group of 3-4 males estimated by me to be 18-21 years old were harassing cyclists on the Fern Ridge Bike Path this morning.  I experienced them under the Oak Patch Acorn Park underpass.  They blocked my path, body checked me as I passed (lightly), and screamed at me.  They did a similar maneuver to one of my 16-year-old students a little to the west of Oak Patch about 10 minutes later.  These incidents happened at 8:30 and around 8:40 am, respectively.

I called the police after my student reported his incident to me, and they said that they’ve received numerous complaints, but cannot find the group of men.  They said that someone has already been assaulted and injured by this group, and they are looking for all possible witnesses.

One of the men was wearing a long, baggy white shirt, had short blond hair, and looked large.  I was focused on him since he was blocking my path, but I think the other two were wearing dark clothes, and my student reported one wearing a hoody.  I’m 90% sure all three (maybe four) were white.

(I was pretty tunnel-visioned on the guy blocking my path.)

If you saw or experienced these people, please call the police.

Update:
The Eugene Police Department is still trying to find these men, but no more attacks have been reported since this morning.  According to EPD there were two separate victims of assault, both male.  One of them walked home “bleeding from facial injuries” and the status of the other was not reported, which leads me to believe that his injuries were less severe.

Update #2:

The assailants were followed by cyclists to the Dairy Mart on West 11th where they were ticketed by police for “menacing.”  They can’t really do more unless the victim with the facial injuries contacts police, since he has not been located.

From EPD:

The police who responded took information about those involved, victims and suspects/persons of interest, however, they were unable to locate the victim who left and who seemed to have injuries from an assault. We’d be very interested in hearing from this person.

  1. A member of the GEARs mailing list adds this to the story:

“I was walking up with my dog at the tail end of the incident and did not witness anything, but was was very impressed to see how quickly the cyclists responded and was recounted the story by a local drunk and a cyclist. At the time I left the are I was told that a few of the cyclists had followed these perps to the DariMart on W. 11th and were awaiting the arrival of the police. Are we sure they are not currently in jail? Anyone else have news?”

My discussions with EPD this afternoon seemed to indicate that they weren’t apprehended, however.

  2. How much of an interest within the bicycle commmunity with the length of the Fern Ridge Bike patch from Polk street to Terry to Greenhill would be interested in starting some type of bike patrol to make the Fern Ridge bike path a safer place for those to walk, ride and enjoy its immortal beauty that it has to offer along the route?

  3. I should add one more thing. These guys were not the usual transients who sit on the benches near there. For the most part those folks have always been friendly to me. We wave and smile every morning.

The guys doing the harassing and assaults were a group I’d never seen before.

  4. I can confirm that I was one of the people who filed a report, and I am happy to say I was not injured. I called the police and, with a couple other cyclists, tailed the perps to the Dairy Mart until the police showed up.

I then identified the individuals who shoved me earlier. The took the suspects information and cited them for menancing but could not arrest them for anything more severe. Hopefully, the person who suffered the facial lacerations filed a report so the police will have enough to arrest the guys for assault.

There were possibly two female joggers who witnessed the attack so if anyone knows anything, please contact the police so then can put these guys away!!!

  5. Turns out they were under the Acorn Park underpass when I saw them. There is no underpass at Oak Patch. I read the map wrong, oops. Another reader reports that they had a run in with them under the same underpass just a few minutes after me.

  6. Just received this from EPD:

“The police who responded took information about those involved, victims and suspects/persons of interest, however, they were unable to locate the victim who left and who seemed to have injuries from an assault. We’d be very interested in hearing from this person.”

  7. I filed a report today with EPD following my evening ride home from work along the Fern Ridge Bike Path. There were nearly 20 individuals between Oak Patch /City View. Many of these individuals were the same ones I saw on the morning commute, but were far more verbally abusive in the afternoon. I agree with the earlier post – these are not the usual individuals that frequent the area.

  8. Riding westbound west of Acorn Park on Fern Ridge Path last Tuesday June 8 around 8:45am, I encountered two young men, one with a grocery cart. He tried to push me off the path with the cart as I passed after two or three vocal warnings “on your left” and “passing.” The two laughed as I passed and the cart hit my right leg. I did not fall and was not injured. The two young men were not homeless regulars. (They don’t make trouble.) They looked cleaner, not homeless or like they live outdoors. The one with the cart had a buzz cut and maybe a dark blue shirt untucked, but I’m not sure of the color. The other one was standing over a smashed beer bottle.
